New Study about Pie and Cowbell and PTSD

This post is dedicated to and inspired by the amazing woman who introduced me to Pie and Cowbell - Jody Schoger!

A new study (and by study I mean something I created in my head while I took a shower this morning) based on many participants (and by many I mean more like a handful, or as many twitter names as you can fit in 140 characters) in a variety of social networking forums (and by variety I mean Twitter with a side order of Facebook) has shown (and by shown I mean I inferred) that Pie and Cowbell (and by pie and cowbell I actually mean real pie and real cowbell) can reduce cancer-related PTSD symptoms (you all know what that means right?) by a statistically high number (and by that I mean a number I made up like 99.99999%).

Okay, this is what really happened. There was this article in the NY Times about a woman who is living with Metastatic Breast Cancer. I saw it posted and I went and read it. So did some other women on Twitter. Then we shared it with anyone who hadn't read it yet. Then we all started tweeting. We are all cancer survivors, some with mets and some without.

At first the conversation was understandably a little deep because we are talking about having a disease that is life threatening. But after we got through the deep waters, with lots of love and support to buoy us, we started tweeting about pie and cowbell. This made us all feel a lot better. I know you might not understand how tweeting about pie and cowbell could make anyone feel better, in fact you might not understand how tweeting can make anyone feel better, but for me and a few other people it seems to work. All the tensions that the article brought up started to dissipate.

Now in my mind cancer is as individual as people and so is PTSD. So what works for a handful of amazing women on Twitter may not work for you. But here are a few other idea to help with PTSD: Running, chocolate, sewing, quilting, cycling, swimming, taking a walk, petting your dog, calling a friend, drinking some tea, writing, blogging, singing, dancing, skiing, knitting, reading, watching a movie, drawing, painting, playing music, listening to music, playing with your kids, playing with your neighbors kids, playing with your grandkids, being no where near kids, shopping, scrapbooking, tai chi, yoga....Do you get the idea, the list goes on and on. Find what works for you and do it! I would love to hear what works for you cause it might work for me too, but even if it doesn't I am glad you found something. Who knows, maybe they'll do a study about you too:)

To find and read about the amazing women who inspired this post you can look at my blog-roll listed here. They are Jody, Marie, Lani, Anna, Katie, Stacey, Nancy, and Alicia, among others!

And to those wonderful women I say, come to my house anytime. I'll be serving pie and starting the Cowbell Choir!

  1. I love it Deb !!!!!!! But now we need a clinical trial, and that's one trial I want to be in. I volunteer to be a lab-rat, and this study could last for the rest of my life for all I care. I swear to God, the thought of my pie-totin'-cowbell-ringin' posse' can just about get me through anything. I KNOW 2011 is going to be a better year just with this Rx. *MWAH* P.S. my favorite pies are lemon-meringue, apple&rhubarb and shoofly.

  3. I love it, too! Who knew being involved with a group of breast cancer women would bring so much fun and laughter? In all the years it's been in and around my life, I never imagined some words tweeted by women I'd never met would matter so much. Thank you all for that. Oh, and more cowbell!

  9. Deb, Here it is a dreary Monday morning and you have made me laugh, I mean really laugh out loud! Good thing I'm home alone right now, or people might think I'm losing it... again. I wasn't expecting a post from you so soon, I was delighted to see one! Keep posting regularly if you can. I loved the "cowbell" post by Jody too. I think I might have to start shopping for a smartphone soon ...

  10. Hysterical and lively posting!! It made me laugh. I love the cowbell reference. What helps me cope is exercise, writing, blogging, reading, and oil painting.

  11. Hi Nancy, I wish I could figure out how to respond to each person's comment directly under the comment but haven't figured that out yet! Not so tech savvy:)
Glad you liked this and it made you laugh! I love to write something funny yet meaningful when I can, so I don't sound like a complainer all the time:)
This one just cam to me in the shower so I had to write it before I forgot it:) I would love to post more often but sometimes find it hard to find the time..I'm sure you can relate! Thanks for reading and commenting!

  12. Hi Beth, Thanks so much for reading and commenting! As I mentioned to Nancy, I prefer to write something light when I can, if you liked this you might want to read my very first post, about mastectomy bras:)

  13. Debbie I love this post, made me smile... but as a UK reader only 'got' it after AnnaR explained what cowbell is. I was googling 'pie and cowbell' like it was some sort of culinary speciality! Anyway, now I know, can I be in the Cowbell Choir?

  14. Hi Sarah, thanks so much for stopping by and reading and commenting. Sorry for the confusion on Cowbell:) I didn't know what it was either and had to ask my friend Jody Schoger (Women With Cancer blogger) what it was.
You are more than welcome to join the Cowbell Choir! I just visited your blog and will be stopping by to read and comment as I can.
    Thanks, Debbie

  17. Deb, and fellow sisters I have never heard of thought of Pie and a Cowbell. I will never be the same when I look at a pie or a cowbell! Smile, smile and more smiles! Maybe if we get the media involved they will do all the work for us in generating the endorsement and funding for the research we need. Blessings Ladies!

  18. I love this post!! Hi Debbie - I found you via Brenda's blog and, what a coinky dink, Jody just introduced herself to me at my blog! I love this blogging community.

I love your list of possible activities. I did most of them (though I don't quilt or knit and I don't need to borrow anyone else`s kids, sigh). My favourite is listening to my iPod. In the middle of the night when the demons,"what if?" and his brother "then what?", dance on my tummy, I plug a bud in my ear and listen to comedy and slice of life podcasts. Before I know it I am either laughing, smiling or asleep. Highly recommend it.

And more cowbell? Well that is practically our family motto. I wonder if there is a needlepoint pattern for that yet?

Looking forward to getting to know you all better. Cheers from Vancouver.
